In the late 1800s, the area was known as Emu Point and was home to a large Chinese community. Chinese gold miners had been having success there since the 1850s and in approximately 1865 constructed the Joss House (also known as the Chinese Masonic Hall) on Finn Street. The building has been restored by the National Trust and is on the Victorian Heritage Register. Also on the register is the Bendigo Gas Works (built in 1860) – a great example of nineteenth-century industry located on Weeroona Avenue.
Rife with mining dumps throughout the first part of the 1900s, the land was cleared and utilised for residential building after World War Two. At the start of the war, the Ordnance Factory was opened and continues to manufacture aircraft, shipping and weapons components today. Now known as Thales Australia (formerly Australian Defence Industries), the world-famous Bushmaster military vehicle is produced here and the company employs over 3,000 locals.
Bendigo North School was built in 1873 but was soon outgrown and replaced by Comet Hill Primary School (now known as Lightning Reef). A Catholic primary school – St Peter’s Primary School – opened in 1972.
The older properties in the area reflect the working-class roots of the post-war residents. More recently, a number of new subdivisions have been established, offering modern, low-maintenance living just minutes from the city. Contemporary townhouses and apartments border the newly expanded hospital precinct and the streets behind Lake Weeroona include character charm with both renovated miner’s cottages and new builds.
North Bendigo has a football and netball club and a fantastic sports reserve. The suburb borders California Gully, Ironbark and White Hills.
