With records showing a post office first opened in Kennington in 1913, and many of the older homes in the area being built in the 1920s, 30s and 40s, this is a suburb that is perhaps considered quite ‘new’ in terms of the city’s rich history.

Some gold was found in Kennington during Bendigo’s gold rush, in 1853, but despite a decade of digging, limited success meant that other areas around the city grew more rapidly. Despite the lack of returns, the land around the picturesque Kennington Reservoir, at the edge of the suburb, was worked by Cornish miners in the 1880s, Chinese miners in the 1900s and returned soldiers after 1918.

The Reservoir itself was built in the 1860s, in an attempt to provide a reliable water source for gold mining, and when the second, adjoining reservoir dried up (now the location of Strathdale Park) the native flora and fauna flourished. Sandhurst Rowing Club held its first regatta at the Reservoir in 1873 but it was the surrounding bushland that appealed to those building in the area in the early days of the 20th century. Today, the reservoir still remains home to an abundance of wildlife including a variety of fish.

The bushland, large allotments and easy access to the city established Strathdale as the neighbourhood to build in during the 70s and 80s and as a result, adjacent Kennington reaped the benefits. In the 1980s, the opening of Strath Village provided shops and cafes to the area, and the amalgamation of the School of Mines and Bendigo Teacher’s College (soon to become La Trobe University Bendigo in 1991) helped further establish the area.

Known for its quarter-acre blocks and solidly-built yellow brick homes with amazing floorboards, large rooms and plenty of storage, Kennington continues to be enjoyed by new homeowners providing cosmetic changes to quality family homes.
