From advertising sales to soccer coaching to playing the guitar and even a stint in the solar industry, JJ's story is a blend of diverse experiences culminating with him landing his role at McKean McGregor.
Describe your career pathway into real estate?
Straight out of school, I took on a bit of a training course with a local agency that I knew through golf. So I’d always had one eye on real estate. I then spent 6 years at the Bendigo Advertiser in Advertising sales, and from there found a role at a local solar company in sales. After 8 years in the industry, and progressing to the role of General Manager, I felt ready for a change. After a few informal chats with Glenn Rea, and having bought and sold with Jayden Donaldson and Michael Brooks in the past, I knew McKean McGregor would be a perfect fit for me.
What does a typical week look like for you?
My favourite thing about the industry so far is the versatile nature of the role. No week ever feels the same as the last. No client or property is the same. Outside of the real estate role, I have a lot of structured commitments. Coaching 4 nights a week, training 2 nights, and of course weekends are a collection of real estate opens, watching my kids play soccer, coaching, and playing soccer or golf myself.
What led you to pursue a career in real estate?
McKean McGregor as a business and culture was what gave me the confidence that I could work in real estate and feel proud of my workplace. I was far more influenced by the collection of quality people, and fantastic culture, than the industry itself.
Can you share a memorable or challenging experience you've had while working in real estate?
The ones that stick with me the most are the first home buyers we’ve dealt with and helped find a home. It’s hard not to be excited with them.
What skills and qualities do you think are crucial for success in the real estate industry?
Communication, authenticity and resilience.
What are some key factors that buyers or sellers typically consider when making real estate decisions?
School zones are a huge draw card for young families. Also, recently there have been more conversations around whether a property has solar and what the cost of living might be (gas, elec, even fuel to and from work schools all being factored in)
Have you seen any notable advancements or impacts of technology on the real estate industry?
I’m relatively new to working in the industry but I have certainly been part of the shift from the reliance on property guides to the use of digital and online.
Hand in hand with this change has come increased knowledge and great amounts of data at the fingertips of buyers and sellers through these online platforms
What advice would you give to someone interested in starting a career in real estate?
Someone told me before I started, “It's not all beers and skittles”. Which for me was great as I don't drink, and very rarely eat sugary foods. So maybe I’d just say that to them and they can take it as they please.
What are some of your hobbies or interests outside of work?
I come from a musical family and have always been a keen guitarist. I’ve also put a lot of hours into Minecraft in my time (With the kids obviously…)
I run to keep fit through the warmer months and love a game of golf (if the weather is perfect), and play soccer in the cold months.
What is your favourite book or movie, and why?
Honestly, for the last 10 years, I haven’t really enjoyed a movie or a book. My streaming platforms are a mess - I watch the first episode of just about every show in the world and very rarely go back for Ep2.
What is something you've always wanted to learn or try, but haven't had the opportunity yet?
I want to say bagpipes. But I’d like to have a better answer.
What values or principles are most important to you in life?
I value individuality. Authenticity.
Is there a particular accomplishment or achievement that you're proud of?
Just taking the leap into real estate and aligning myself with a business like McKean McGregor.
